In a world where independence is a key to confidence and success, learners with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and/or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) often face unique challenges in developing the skills they need to thrive. That’s where Stepping Stones comes in—a transformative new programme that blends the benefits of outdoor learning with the essential life skills needed for independent living.
WHAT IS STEPPING STONES?
Stepping Stones has been developed by Edgmond Hall Centre for Outdoor Learning, which is one of the 4 residential education centres which make up Sandwell Residential Education Service. Stepping Stones is an innovative residential programme tailored specifically for SEMH and SEND learners. It offers immersive, supportive experiences in our outdoor learning based setting, where participants can build practical life skills in a real-world context.
From household tasks and budgeting to teamwork and personal care, the programme is designed to nurture independence in a way that’s engaging, empowering, and fun.
WHY LINK WITH OUTDOOR LEARNING?
Outdoor learning when coupled with an overnight residentials provides a unique environment where learning happens naturally, and with the benefit of time. Away from the classroom, learners are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and discover their capabilities. Whether it’s navigating a forest trail, preparing a group meal, or managing personal belongings, every activity is a stepping stone toward greater self-reliance.
